Chapter 10: Physics of `random experiments'
 The book by Eduardo M.R.A. Engel, A road to randomness in
physical systems, Springer, Berlin, 1992, describes related work in probability
and statistics. [Contributed by Nick Cox.]
 p. 315, section 10.2: Neither Ellis nor Venn was the equal of
Laplace mathematically, but both did very well in mathematics at Cambridge, an
education which included much applied mathematics. Ellis was 1st
Wrangler (top in mathematics) in 1840 and Venn was 6th Wrangler in
